Which is more popular, the SAT or the ACT?

Until 2012, the SAT was more popular than the ACT, with a market share of around 55 percent vs 45 percent. Students in coastal high schools who live in zip codes with more Starbucks than Walmarts tended to take the SAT, whereas students in the interior of the United States who lived in zip codes with more Walmarts than Starbucks tended to take the ACT. In addition, it was thought that coastal universities favored the SAT, whilst colleges in the interior preferred the ACT. As the idea that universities preferred one exam over the other faded, ACT began to eat into SAT's market share.

Which test is preferred by colleges: the SAT or the ACT?

As the ACT examination became more popular, colleges and universities began to recognize it as a reliable and respected exam. Today, every university in the United States accepts both the SAT and the ACT, with no preference for one over the other.

Many students take both tests, but we urge that you choose one. Take a timed practice exam for both tests and then determine which one to focus on depending on your performance and preferences.

Which of the following tests should I take?
So, which of the following tests should you take? It's all about your abilities and tastes.

Because ACT test questions are shorter and clearer than SAT test questions, you'll spend less time trying to figure out what the question is asking and more time working out the answer.

Furthermore, the ACT weights each section equally, so you can have a low section score and still have a high composite score. If you have trouble with math, good scores in the Science, Reading, and English sections can help you raise your composite score.

The SAT test may be preferred by strong mathematicians. The SAT math score is 50 percent of the total score due to the way SAT scores are calculated. Because the two section scores (Math and Evidence-Based Writing and Language) are generally presented instead of the total score on the SAT, a strong math score might truly stand out.

Those who believe they have a chance at National Merit Scholar status should also consider taking the SAT because National Merit Scholars are chosen based on PSAT results; if you prepare for the PSAT, you may also study for the SAT, which follows a similar pattern.
